Earning a degree in golf
A 27-year-old Selkirk native, Andrews is giving lessons for the Knowledge Network as he works toward his ultimate goal of becoming a Class A teaching professional."If you're interested in that stuff and trying to make golf your career, it's a great way to get started," Andrews said of the 16-month Golf Academy program. "I don't know that Rory McIlroy Was Not Ready To Win Master you want to stop at that point, but it's definitely good for entry-level management kind of jobs."
Andrews, who shot his 6-under-par nine-hole score in a high school match at Pinehaven, spent a year at Methodist College, then transferred to the Golf Academy of Myrtle Beach (S.C.), then moved on to Orlando.He took a year off to try the Hooters Tour, a mini pro tour in the southeast.Now he has the training to start a career in the $76 billion-a-year golf industry."It's a business degree, but it has an emphasis on golf, being a golf professional," he said. "Just giving the knowledge of the industry was beneficial to me, whether it was job interviews or going to the PGA Merchandise Show, buying the right kind of merchandise. Those are the things that stick with me."Schenectady native Bryan Bigley, who has been playing mini-tours in the North Carolina area, Monday qualified for this week's PGA Tour stop at Quail Hollow. Bigley shot a 4-under 66 in a Monday qualifier, then birdied two playoff holes to win the last of four berths. ... The Schenectady County Women's Tournament, incorrectly listed in our Golf Guide 2011 as Saturday, May 17 (which isn't even a Saturday), actually is Saturday, June 4.Tiger Woods' stock apparently isn't it what it used to be. When Woods made an appearance two years ago at the Turning Stone Resort, tickets were $330 apiece. He is returning Tuesday, July 5, for the fourth annual Notah Begay III Foundation Challenge, and tickets are just $50 -- $40 if you buy before May 15. Woods, Begay and Rickie Fowler will play with NFL quarterbacks Tony Romo and Sam Bradford and three players to be determined in a better-ball format.
